Term 2, week 10

Friday’s trip to Spookers was fantastic. A bunch of cynical 16 year olds terrified out of their wits. What happens at Spookers stays at Spookers.

Term 2, week 9

Y9s are working on their static images. They’re (mostly) working well, although I feel like time has been a bit constricted this week because we spent so long on the creative writing task. That being said, the students’ creative writing does seem really rather good on first glance, and they did really enjoy/engage with the task. Sometimes it’s good to slow down, right?

Tonight Milton and I are taking the Y12s students to Spookers, preceeded by pizza and a viewing of The Shining. Can’t wait …

Term 2, week 9

Today was the Y13 edit day – a day where my entire Y13 class stayed in E1 and worked on their documentary with varying success. Tyrone, Krissy and Jayden are working well, as are Rebecca, Harmony and Steven. Rose is also working well (almost single-handedly) because the other two people in her group have been wagging school with great ghusto. Anyway, despite the inevitable claustrophoboia of being stuck in a room with 25 17 year olds for A WHOLE DAY, it was a useful learning experience for me, and a good opportunity for the class to work for a meaningful length of time without having to deal with schoolbells.

Term 2, week 8

Started the horror genre with my Y12s today, to much enthusiasm. They’ve not really engaged with the representation unit – not sure what I can for next year, but I wonder if I can replace the Tearaway material with something slightly different. Shortland Street? (Not that that’s edgy.) The actual pedagogy – the learning activities etc. – have worked well, but I’m just finding it so hard to stop the students from being overly glib and/or sarcastic in their responses. Will be interested to see how they deal with the early horror films we study, like Nosferatu and Frankenstein.

Term 2, week 6

My Y9 class had their close reading test today. I haven’t marked them yet, but on first glance it looks like they’ve done well. I really feel like I’ve taught this unit well, so I’m looking forward to marking their tests.

Term 2, week 6

Nice long weekend, although as usual there was loads of school stuff to do. Seniors are doing exams although this doesn’t really seem to affect the day to day running of my classes.

Ordered pizza for my Y9 class today. The idiots at Domino’s Pizza in GI screwed up my order and made one too few pizzas, which meant that there was slightly too little food. Typically, people in the class bitched about this, and also the fact that I didn’t buy drinks, rather than actually thanking me for shelling out $60 on them. Charming … Still, as an exercise, the incentive went worked pretty well and they’ve generally been more respectiful of each other (and me) over the last few weeks.
